Cargo owners have planned the construction of a number of sea terminals
By 2025, Russia plans to build almost two dozen new sea terminals for handling coal, fertilizers and grains. The activity of coal miners is mainly concentrated in the far East, although a number of major projects are also planned in the Baltic and Black sea. New terminals for transshipment of fertilizers can be built mainly in the North-West of Russia as an alternative to the Baltic ports and to meet the need for sales channels due to growing production volumes. New large terminals for grain transshipment may appear for the first time in the Baltic sea. Initiators of projects, usually from among cargo owners or transport companies, are not afraid of either the last year's deterioration in the price situation on world markets, or the possible delay in the development of railway infrastructure. In the medium and even longer term, manufacturers and suppliers expect to increase production and export shipments, and they want to have their own harbors that guarantee business continuity.
Russian grain exports may increase significantly
Grain production in Russia by 2035 should grow by 33% compared to 2018 and reach 150.3 million tons, according to the new strategy for the development of the grain complex, approved last year by the Russian government. More than 42% of this volume, or 63.6 million tons, is planned to be exported. Market participants believe that the targets can be reached much earlier. These plans will require serious development of transport infrastructure for storage, transportation and transshipment of grain.

Technotrans group of companies, which specializes in railway transportation of grain, plans to complete the design of its own marine terminal in the port of Vysotsk (Leningrad region) with a capacity of 4 million tons per year in 2020. The new transshipment complex, which can be built in 2022, will allow the group to diversify its activities and reduce its dependence on other players in the stevedoring market, said Sergey Kondratyuk, managing Director of Technotrans, in an interview with Argus.
